Description
These smocks have seen a great deal in their times, most have large repairs, rough edges, faded and worn areas + that good old timey surplus smell to boot. Please check the photos for examples of the condition and repairs (also our handy Condition Guide linked at the bottom of the listing).
These old boys have character - Belgian Army M58 Smocks (from 1958-1968) in jigsaw camouflage. Most of these jackets are dated 1958 on the tag, with a couple of exceptions dating 1963 & 1968. Belgian jigsaw pattern camouflage had just been introduced for Belgian elite forces a couple of years before the earliest of these jackets!
These smocks are made from a hefty windproof canvas type material, with paratrooper's ''beaver tails'' that were used to stop the overcoat moving when doing paratrooper business (such as parachuting). These tails vary in fastening on this batch, either folding inwards or to the outer, fixed with press studs. As these smocks were designed to be used as over coats to webbing, they would be fitted loosely and fairly wide to the chest. Four billow type pockets are to the front (two on the chest, two on the hips) and the jacket closes with either press stud, or stud and full length zip.
Some of these jackets are nearing 70 years of age and while most of these have seen better days, the battle damage adds unique history & character. One for the collectors and jigsaw enthusiasts!
