For millennia soldiers have required tools to dig earthworks be it defensive or 'offensive' throughout warfare's history. US soldiers were no different of course and like all militaries during the course of the Second World War, they issued a portable shovel as well. Unlike there other contemporaries however, the US shovel has a T-handle design making them a bit more unique.
